Working in Oshawa

Durham's biggest city.

Oshawa's housing splits roughly north and south. South of the 401 and around the core are older homes with established yards, where fence and deck replacement are the usual jobs. North Oshawa — Samac, Taunton, Windfields, Kedron — is newer subdivision housing with smaller rear yards and builder-grade driveways ready for an interlock upgrade.

Oshawa's fence rules are a little different from the GTA norm: up to 2.2 m along rear and side lot lines, but only 0.9 m in the front yard. Driveways are capped at half the front yard, so widening plans need checking first.

City of Oshawa Rules

Know the bylaws before you build.

We check these on every Oshawa quote visit. Bylaws change and lots differ (corner lots, easements, ravine areas), so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the City of Oshawa for your address.

  • Fence height

Fence By-law 23-2014: up to 2.2 m within 2.0 m of a rear or side lot line, 0.9 m in the front yard, and 0.9 m inside corner and driveway sight triangles.

  • Pool enclosures

At least 1.5 m high (By-law 79-2006), and a Pool Enclosure Permit is required for new or substantially repaired enclosures.

    City of Oshawa: pools
  • Trees

Oshawa's Tree By-law protects City-owned trees; woodlands over 1 hectare fall under Durham Region's woodland by-law. Typical backyard trees on private lots aren't covered by a City permit.

  • Driveway widening

A new or wider curb cut needs an Access to Property Permit, the driveway can't cover more than 50% of the front yard, and changing the grade within 0.6 m of the property line needs a Site Alteration Permit.

  • Conservation areas

Most of Oshawa is in the Central Lake Ontario Conservation (CLOCA) watershed; work near creeks and valleys may need CLOCA approval.

  • Deck permits

Oshawa requires a permit for new or replacement decks, including platforms attached to the house or an above-ground pool. The exception: a house deck with no roof that's no more than 600 mm (24") above ground.
